Pikestones: A Megalithic Chambered Tomb Near Bolton, Greater Manchester

The Pikestones, located on Angelzarke Moor near Bolton in Greater Manchester. Located at 275m above sea level on Anglezarke Moor to the north of Horwich, (Map Ref: SD627123), is a significant prehistoric site. This Megalithic chambered tomb features a cairn structure that runs from north to south, with dimensions measuring 45.5 metres in length and 14.9 metres in width at the northern end. The southern section of the cairn tapers down to 6.7 metres in width.

Five large slabs define the northern side of the cairn, with two upright stones forming the eastern side of the structure. These remarkable stones provide a glimpse into the site's unique architectural style, known as Cotswold-Severn, which is predominantly found in the southern parts of England, though it may extend as far north as the Derbyshire White Peak.

The Pikestones is believed to date back to the Neolithic period, with archaeological evidence supporting this theory. The discovery of lithic tools and cremation remains in the surrounding area further confirms its prehistoric origin. Access to the site is rated Grade 4 to 5, indicating that while it is relatively accessible, it may require some effort to reach.
