Ringstone Edge, Barkisland, Calderdale
Ringstone Edge is a historic site located in Barkisland, Calderdale, with access categorized as Grade 2/3. The site features a ringwork, a type of prehistoric structure, with a diameter of approximately 9.5 meters. While the rubble bank is still visible, historic records indicate that the standing stones were removed in the 18th century.
In 1905, a cinerary urn was discovered near the south-west edge of the circle. Over time, additional archaeological findings included five separate interments and fragments found near the center of the south-west area of the site. These discoveries provide valuable insight into the site's historical significance.
The ringwork at Ringstone Edge shares similar traits with other sites in the Dark Peak region of Derbyshire, indicating a connection between these locations. The overall area measures around 30 meters in diameter.
From a cosmological perspective, many prehistoric sites, including stone circles and cairns, often have ritual significance associated with the south-west part of the site. At Ringstone Edge, the urn was found encased between two upright stones with a flat stone placed on top, situated in the south-west part of the circle.
